BiodiversIT

in progress.png

The OLGA BiodiversIT tool is a cutting-edge system for monitoring biodiversity at airports. Designed to improve management practices and bolster local biodiversity, the BiodiversIT system leverages advanced field sensors, AI algorithms, and data analytics. It captures comprehensive biodiversity data through both fixed and mobile edge computing stations, integrating inputs from local observations and open databases.

Ongoing advancements in algorithms and detection technologies will further enhance BiodiversIT's role in supporting sustainable airport operations and preserving biodiversity, while maintaining high aviation safety standards.

Objectives

The BiodiversIT innovation project represents a significant advancement in biodiversity management at airport environments.

The objectives of this innovation are to:

  • Consolidate and Enhance Data Management: Integrate biodiversity observation and knowledge data to improve sharing, mapping, tracking, and promotion.

  • Advance Monitoring Technologies: Utilize current technologies, including sensors and AI algorithms, to streamline and enhance the monitoring of high-stakes species.

  • Manage Species Diversity: Address both notable and less desirable species, such as Invasive Exotic Species, to ensure balanced biodiversity management.

  • Ensure Aeronautical Safety: Focus on plant species that attract avifauna to maintain aeronautical safety and support aircraft operations.

In the framework of OLGA, the BiodiversIT Tool will be replicated by Zagreb Airport and SEA Milan in collaboration with Ticino Park. They will also conduct a real-life review of the BiodiversIT system by implementing and testing it in dedicated sites, particularly in park areas with ongoing restoration projects.

Key figures

The biodiversity at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport covers:
