Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is a substitute for fossil-based kerosene. SAF offers the same level of safety as kerosene and can be blended with it without requiring modifications to aircraft or engines. SAF is produced from non-fossil resources such as used oils or agricultural waste.
SAF significantly reduces CO₂ emissions across its entire life cycle, from production to combustion, compared to traditional fossil-based kerosene. Although SAF releases the same amount of CO₂ as kerosene during flight, the overall reduction in emissions comes from how they are produced.
SAF can reduce up to 75% reduction in CO2 emissions over its entire life cycle compared to fossil-based kerosene.
SAF distribution network is mostly undifferentiated. This means that once produced, SAF is injected into the distribution network and comingled with traditional jet fuel molecules, making it impossible and costly to trace it physically.
It becomes key to have a system enabling airlines to prove their SAF sustainable origin, CO2 benefits and to ensure there are no double claims of these sustainability attributes.

Objectives
Development of a proof of concept of a value chain tracking tool supporting airlines in the accounting and sustainability criteria management of the volume of SAF purchased.
Guarantee a correct data acquisition and traceability throughout the whole value chain, relying on blockchain technology.
Progress
1) Delivery of the prototype allowing:
A digital registration of the volume of SAF with all the sustainability characteristics attached (feedstocks, origin of the feedstock, % of GHG savings, ISCC Certifications …) and all proofs documents and certificates stored.
Allocation of volume of SAF to specific flights.
Certificates issued to claim SAF on specific flights with the appropriate sustainability criteria (including a Blockchain Id.).
Underlying Blockchain technology ensuring full auditability and no double counting.
2) Successful 1st use case: 445 tons of SAF (ISCC EU certified) enable to demonstrate 30% use of SAF on takeoff phases of 1470 medium haul flights and 840 long haul flights departing CDG during the period of the Paris Olympic & Paralympic Games 2024 (July 26th-August 11th and August 28th to September 8th ).
3) A 2nd use case will be performed during winter Milano-Cortina Olympic & Paralympic Games 2026 to decarbonize two flights from/to CDG-MXP by using SAF.
Key figures
Protype & 1st use case delivered
445 tons of SAF, iSCC EU certified, UCO feedstock, 81.8% of GHG savings
